Romania
Many will remember the pictures on TV of neglected and abused children in orphanages. Images of sad and hungry people living in a country without hope. Maybe you remember a TV programme in which Aneka Rice and her team built a new orphange?
Today, resources are still poor and 'worn out'. For example, urgent medical equipment 'well past their sell-by dates', while here in the UK, good quality equipment, capable of saving lives, is conitually being scrapped and thrown away?
During the 1990's, roads through Europe became populated with truck convoys, transporting humanitarian aid to Romania. Anything and everything was taken as people from 'The west' responded to appeals through the media for these 'poor people'.
Story after story wold be told by those taking aid of the amazing geneorosity and hospitality of the Romanian people. Again and again, people would say "I took aid to help others but feel I reurned the richer'.
Although Romania hope to join the European Union in 2007, for many life remains difficult. High unemployment and ever-increasing inflation. Many of the young people view 'Te west' as a 'ticket to a better life style'. Tey see little hope within their own country for their future.
Our projects need to be long-term. Support is needed for the marginalised such as the elderly, For the children who live on the streets and for those with 'special needs'. There is much to be done.
What Romanian people lack in resources they more than make up with hospitality and a willingness to progress. Trans-mission Partnerships would like to be part of a long term support for communities in Romania.
